I think it might be fun for everyone to post on this topic:

 

If you only had three flies for the rest of your life, what would they be?

 

Mine are:

1)  Pheasant Tail

2)  Hares Ear

3)  Parachute Adams

 

Between the pheasant tail and the hares ear I think you can reasonably imitate every mayfly nymph, stonefly nymph, and even caddis pupa.

 

I had a hard time choosing parachute adams, but I guess I'm just choosing to fish practically every conceivable mayfly hatch and being pretty bummed when the caddis are active.  Heck, maybe I'd tie a little hunchback olive hares ear on to the adams as a dropper and hope to imitate a caddis pupa :)
