Last week Jay and I did a few days on the Methow. We fished
Tuesday afternoon a few hours, all day Wednesday, and Thursday morning. We
ended up getting five steelhead. Jay got one on a dry line the first afternoon
but after that it was all sink tips or, dare I say it, nymphing. We floated on
Wednesday and the guide was pretty into nymph fishing so on many runs I would
nymph the upper pocket water while Jay swung flies. I got two steelhead on the
nymph that day along with a very nice cutt-bow and a few big whitefish. I got
two fish swinging on a type 3 sink tip too, finally breaking my steelhead jinx
in the state of Washington
in a big way. The water is getting cold as is the air, we had frozen guides on
Thursday morning. We fished mostly from mile 8 up to Twisp.
Today I hit the Yakima
and found the fish still rising but getting spookier and pickier. I got fish
on my #20 CDC Emerger and a #22 BWO Comparadun. I was using 6x tippets and
actually had a few fish break me off but I got more rises on 6x than 5x which I
started with. I did best when the hatch was sporadic from 11-2 and I was targeting
single fish or small pods. From 2-3:30 the hatch was thicker but I just had a
hell of a time getting fish then, I hooked up a few but seemed to miss strikes
or spook fish easier then than earlier in the day. The weather looks somewhat stable
so the Yak should stay in good condition this week.
