Subject: Yakima report Sunday

Floated the Yakima Sunday, the canyon from mile 21 to Red's. The float was a first for me.

Things started off with a bang, caught a nice one on the first cast from the boat on a stonefly nymph.  Unfortunately it was not an indication of the pace the rest of the day.  We started early - about 9:30.  We caught a few on nymphs but as rising action increased, switched to caddis dries with caddis emerger trailers.  I caught the nicest fish of the day, about a 16-17 inch, thick-bodied rainbow, on the caddis shortly thereafter.

There was lots of boat traffic, but plenty of room for everyone.  Nobody seemed to be just tearing them up - between my partner and I we probably caught 20 fish from morning to about 7pm.  But, If we had the right flies, it could have been 100.

At one point around 5pm, about 4 miles in, we pulled over and found an area where the fish were feeding in a frenzy on top for what we thought were caddis or mayflies....after dozens of tries at different patterns we only managed to catch a few fish, despite the fact that they were feeding literally at our feet.  Finally my partner caught what he thought they were after - grey wings, grey and black striped body - I think it was a form of caddis but not sure - he thought a form of mayfly.  anyway, after tying on our closest matches, he immediately caught fish, and I managed to catch a couple too.  The frenzy went on for well over an hour and clearly we were not matching it - if so, it would have been epic fishing.  Very frustrating.  (we tried various nymphs, emergers combos too but never dialled it in)

All in all, a very fun day.  We may have been victims of too much food on the river competing for trout's attention - literally clouds of bugs over the river the entire day.
