I put in at 10:30 a.m. this morning and floated from around I was fishing typical deep-nymphing tactics with a #10
Tungsten Copper John and a #18 BH FB GRHE. Fish came to both flies at about an
even ratio. In the course of my 8 Hr float I landed about two dozen rainbows
and perhaps a dozen whitefish. In the mix were several bows in the 15-17”
range and two that were right at 18”. I lost a couple fish later in the
day that I got good looks at that were at least 20”. Weather was better than expected most of the day. The
morning was quite nice. In the afternoon there were light showers. In the
evening it really started pissing rain and I was glad that I was near my
takeout at that point. Flows were steady between 320-325 cfs. There wasn’t
a whole lot of hatch activity, as can be expected of the Cedar, but I did note
the occasional PMD, Yellow Sally and Caddis. I saw *one* big-ol’ Gray drake. No stoneflies made an
appearance today. Seining a bit turned up #14-16 reddish brown swimmer mayfly
nymphs, #16-18 black swimmer mayfly nymphs, #18 black clinger mayfly nymphs, small
cased caddis, and even one good size (#12?) Green Rockworm. Several seining
efforts surprisingly turned up *no*
stonefly nymphs. There were people about, of course, but nothing like opening
day last year. About the time people were off work the crowd increased a bit.
Floating made that not a problem though as people were congregated around the
access points and there’s lots of good fishing in between. I consistently catch more and bigger fish on the Cedar than
the Cheers and tight lines. Jim |
