Ray,
You can visit my fly-fishing blog at:
http://expat.my-expressions.com/
The blog is about my Euro fly-fishing experiences. The trip reports discuss most of the questions that you have asked. From Scotland, Glasgow and Edinburgh, you can travel by air direct to many cities in Europe. Competition is high, the fares are low, the dollar sucks, but not as bad a few weeks ago. To learn where you can go from these two airports go to the web sites below and click on “Flight Information” and then “Destinations and Airlines” respectively.

A site that you may want to check out is:

Scroll through both the “General Fly Fishing Topics” and “UK and European River Updates” forums and looks for relevant topics.

I know this is a little early but I am planning on taking a combo Biz & Vacation Extended trip to Europe in 2006 and want to spend as much time fly fishing as I can. My trip is open for either late spring/early summer or late summer/early fall? Anyone have any suggestions as to which would be a better time to go?
Also if things work out I will be able to use my sister & Brother in-law's place in Scotland as a home base for both the Business & fishing trips. The Length of the trip will be 3/4 weeks or possibly as long as 6/8 weeks, to early to tell right now. Tentative schedule puts me in the UK, France, Germany, Spain & Italy but this may change with additions and drop offs.
I want to take a Sage SP 5wt & Orvis 2wt but friends tell me they will probably get lost or stolen and to buy a cheap 5wt to take on the trip instead but they have never travel much in a foreign country, so I am not sure how good their advice is even though they are looking out for my well being. Can anyone out there comment on this or make some suggestions regarding this and what type of gear & flies to drag along?
Looking forward to the replies and I WILL be asking more questions in the future as I have never fished out side of the U.S. [mainly the PNW] and British Columbia.
Thanks, Ray |
