Dave,

Yeah, the water is low for this time of year.  But as you get below Carlton and Methow, it's a much different river.  More water, deeper pools, lots of faster and bouldery pocket water.   I think because of the water situation, that's why the majority of the fish are holding in the lower river.

As for Moccassin, isn't that a blast?  I fish there every spring, and occasionally in the fall, it's worth every penny..a very quality fishery they have built there.   And a beautiful setting too.

Steve,

I was in Winthrop over the weekend fishing Moccasin Lake and noticed how little water was in the Methow. Is that level normal? It seemed so low I was concerned it would be hard on the fish population.

It was my first time fishing Moccasin Lake and it was absolutely incredible. It is an exceptionally well-managed lake and worth the $175/rod per day rate.

Subject: Methow Report

Was only able to fish Sunday...started my day in the Carlton area around 11:00am...Fished my favorite two holes hard with nothing to show for it although I did briefly hook something with some heft to it, but my guess is it was a trout.

Moved down to the Methow area around 3..spoke to 3 guys who said they had caught 3 steelhead and one chinook below Methow...so I thought hmmm.  Better head lower.   So I did.

After some driving and scouting, and scrambling down a steep rocky bank..I stumbled across a really beautiful piece of water.  My second cast resulted in one of those stereotypical "almost ripped the rod outta my hands" take.   The fish held deep in the pool for a mintue then scooted up into some fast deep water and the fly came unbuttoned.  Never saw the fish, but man it felt big.

About 15 minutes later..different fly...same place, another vicious take.   But not the same weight to it.   This turned out to be a  beautifully colored and fat 16 inch rainbow.

That was it...motto of this report is if you fish the Methow now, fish town of Methow or below would be my recommendation!
