Computers and Art on Display One hundred year old John Llewellyn Jones paintings and trendy coloured computers may not have much in common, but this unusual contrast is expected to attract a variety of visitors to an inaugural computer showcase in Geraldton.
Securing the prestigious John Llewellyn Jones exhibition as the backdrop for contemporary computer technology has been an added bonus for the organisers of a computer showcase to be held at the Geraldton Regional Art Gallery this month. Geraldton Regional Art Gallery director, Damian Kelly said the display would appeal to a wide audience. "The contrast of 100 year old paintings alongside new technology will create a display that will interest everyone," Mr Kelly said. The GMUG Computer Showcase is sponsored by Apple Australia and iinet and will host the best of the Apple computer range including the popular fruit coloured iMac computers, OS X, Apple's latest Unix based operating system, DVD and multi media technology, remote internet access, mixed platform networks, as well as some of the latest hardware and software. Visitors will be able to see working demonstrations of early Apple computers, as well as visit the stall of local sponsors Bluff Point Computers, Mt Tarcoola Computers and iinet, and visiting exhibitor, AppleCentre Joondalup. The operating system of Apple computers is known for its user friendliness and for being immune to the thousands of viruses which stalk Microsoft's Windows operating systems. Geraldton Mac Users' Group (GMUG) is an on-line subscribers list, formed last January by a group of enthusiastic local Mac users, including Chapman Valley Primary School principal Reg Whitely. This school's educational computer network is made up entirely of Apple computers, but with no Apple reseller based in the Midwest, he saw the need for a support network for his staff and students, as well as the increasing numbers of Apple Macintosh users in the region. GMUG Moderator Reg Whitely says that Macintosh computers are unique because of their ease of use and their system stability. "I am simply amazed at the numbers of Mac users in Geraldton, ranging from home and small business users, to educators and high end graphics and multimedia professionals. Their combined knowledge base is impressive," Mr Whitely said. The demand for information, support and Macintosh products prompted the virtual group to organise the GMUG Computer Showcase. "We expect the showcase to be of interest to anyone with even the remotest interest in contemporary technology. I'm certain anyone visiting the Showcase couldn't help being impressed," Mr Whitely said. GMUG members are also supporting the Computing the Curriculum eLearning Expo for Midwest educators that will be running concurrently at the Carson Terrace campus of Geraldton Secondary College. The GMUG 2001 Computer Showcase will be open to the public at the Geraldton Regional Art Gallery for one day only, from 10am until 3pm, Saturday 20 October.
