Further to Onno's excellent post, it could also be that we have set up the wamug list to moderate first post. This means that for any new subscriber that joins, the first posting they make to the list has to be approved by a moderator before they are permitted to post anything else.
This is designed to stop people joining the list, posting SPAM and then unsubscribing.
