When I try to trash the offending folders they refuse to die. Option - trash
doesn't work and they are not locked. If I try to cut them and paste back
onto the original windows formatted Zip disk they just copy and refuse to
budge from the G4 hard drive.

One issue I had was that I ended up with two '..' directories in a folder and there is no way to delete the second one. Rebooting into Classic shows the directory (with name ..) and you can then trash it easily. Perhaps that is your problem as well?

There have been recent reports that YahooGroups has changed
everyone's marketing preferences. However I can't actually confirm
that that's the case, because I haven't been able to find the pages
the instructions talk about on my account. Although a few people
report they have been able to (I think it might be a difference
between Yahoo and Yahoo Australia&NZ). Instructions for checking your
marketing preferences are below.

Yes, the Australian accounts do not have the same preferences and managed to escape this gross vandalism by Yahoo. If you have a non-Australian account then this preference may well be causing some problems.
