UPS is short for "uninterrupted power supply" the main thing they are used for is for protecting your IT investment by in the event of a power failure allow you extra time to save your data and turn off you equipment safely there are many different types that do varying different things. Some basic UPS like the Sola brand entry level ones can also have built surge protection. The larger units can come with software for greater management. They are usually large and a lot heavy as they contain large batteries. Most of them a square boxes, some of them like the entry level Sola ones look like a larger version of a powerboard.
