Mail-hub Telstra cable

Hi. Like Houston I have a problem :-(. Every so often I get my mail 
returned saying there is a problem with my SMTP settings . If I go away 
and come back sometime later without changing anything it works. I am 
using biege G3/300 Mac OS X Cable to telstra bigpond. Programme is Mail 
1.1. My question is :- Is this my end or TELSTRA's end
