Virex and the Bugbear virus
---------------------------
The Bugbear virus has no impact on the Mac and, therefore, will not be detected by Virex 5.9-6.1. Virex 7 for Mac OS X is capable of detecting both Mac and PC viruses. Virex 7 can detect the Bugbear virus if one installs the 4226 DAT file, or newer, from <http://www.mcafeeb2b.com/naicommon/download/dats/find.asp>

An attachment received with these odd emails is the virus itself. The name of the attachment will be different in almost every email. Anyone receiving odd emails should delete the email and any related attachments so as not to inadvertently forward them to a Windows PC.

Whilst the Bugbear virus cannot "infect" your Mac, you will probably receive multiple copies of Bugbear-infected emails and this can be annoying as each one contains an attachment. One of our customers reported receiving over 160 such emails. If you wish to avoid downloading all of these virus attachments, review your email preferences and see if there is a setting to only download the first few kilobytes of each email. This will enable you to receive normal emails whilst preventing attachments from being downloaded. There is usually an option to fetch the entire email if you wish to receive it. * In Eudora, you can find this setting by choosing Special>Settings>Checking Mail>Skip messages over __ KB. Set the __ to a size such as 20 KB. * In Outlook Express 5, you can find this setting by choosing Tools>Accounts>Mail. Double-click on your account and then click the Options tab. Enable the option to "Partially retrieve messages over __ KB." * In Mail.app for Mac OS X, you can find this setting by choosing Mail>Preferences>Accounts. Double-click on your account and then click the Advanced tab. Enter a number in to the setting named "Prompt me to skip messages over __ KB." * In Netscape Communicator 4.7.x, you can find this setting by choosing Edit>Preferences>Mail & Newsgroups>Disk Space>Do not store messages locally that are larger than __ K. PICA Software does not support email programs but we hope you find these tips to be useful.
