A little difficult to work out without seeing the way your machine is 
set up. The first thing that comes to mind is that downloads ARE 
occurring, but are ending up in an unknown location. Check Preferences 
> Download Options > Download Folder. If necessary, change the setting 
to a folder you know.

If this is not the problem, I don't think it's going to be possible to 
sort it out online.
