Thanks for the reference. The thrust of the article is that the mtu problem
is experienced because Macs use a higher number of maximum transmissible
units than the isp is set to, and says that the problem exists in OS 10.2 to
10.2.4 and is fixed in OS 10.2.5 and later.

Unfortunately, it is not. I have OS 10.2.6 ( have installed and updated with
each revision of OS X using combo updates) and still had the problem until
yesterday when I took a deep breath and used Terminal to reset the mtu to
1400, with the help of an iinet technician.

There's an Apple Knowledge Base article about it, but the script that I used
can be found on

MTU problems are discussed on Whirlpool at
<http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=7326>

There is also a good discussion about ADSL problems in general on
<http://adsl.cutw.net/dsl.html>

Iinet says that Telstra is soon to install new equipment that should make
the problems go away.
