Advice please on the best anti-virus software for OSX, and also how
necessary it is.

It depends on whether you use Microsoft products. If you rely on Word
or other Microsoft apps I'd recommend it, especially if you receive
document files from other users, or distribute document files to them.
Otherwise I haven't used a virus checker in about 2 years, and then
only Disinfectant. It's a risk I'm willing to take, and am indeed
taking. Of course I have backups...
