Tried that one, but maybe my explanation wasn't that clear :-)
However, I reckon Matt may have the answer - how come a requirement as
basic as that has yet to be dealt with?
Definitely time to look at some others - Eudora, GyazMail or PowerMail
seem to be top alternatives.

Not entirely...
There has been a bug in Mail related to deleting mail from the server
since 10.2.3 Unfortunately the fix hasn't been included in any publicly
available update yet.
Just be good and Santa will bring you something for Christmas.
