Booting from FireWire / USB

Could someone complete the following "boot truth table" for me - I haven't yet found a definitive guide.
Machine : Mac PowerBook Lombard 333MHz, 320Mb RAM, RATOC FireWire card, 40Gb External HD in USB / FireWire combo case.

I'd really like to be able to boot from the external HD while I sort what 
the *^&% is going on with my internal one!
