Hi all,
Can this be done at all using a switch or a computer with two ethernet
cards in it? The switch option has been tried, but when the D-Link
DSL-300 modem was connected to the Belkin 5 port switch using the
crossover cable the two computers couldn't connect to each other. The
computers need to connect to each other, because the modem can only
handle having one 'manager PC'. The other computer appeared in the file
sharing list for both computers, but didn't connect. Without the modem
the computers could do file sharing fine. I suspect this is because of
conflicting IP addresses: the modem global IP address was found to be
the same as the Powerbook G4 laptop's file sharing address.
Using the switch without a router to share the internet connection is
unlikely as I have never heard of it being done, however one computer
having two network cards and sharing an ADSL connection has been done
with PCs at least. However, in my Power Mac G3 desktop 233MHz computer
I put a Communication Slot II network card in the slot and it didn't
work. No LEDs on, no file sharing, no modem connection, nothing. It
worked in the computer I got it from (a Performa 6400-180). The
built-in ethernet still worked. It would have been stupid to put a
non-functioning Communication Slot in the computer, so I questioned
whether the computer can handle two ethernet cards.
Any input would be appreciated.
