Dear members,
I wish to connect 2 G4 computers together via ethernet cable (not with an
ethernet hub)
Would I use a standard ethernet cable (blue) or a crossover ethernet cable
(red). Many thanks

Any machine with a G4 in it should support automatic detection of the cable type, so in theory it shouldn't matter.

... also be careful of using the colour of an Ethernet cable to determine it's type, there are NO standards for this.

Alas, any monkey can assemble a cable and call it what ever it likes.

One company I serviced had crossovers at all of its computer bays when I replaced their switches, taking it at face value I set my end(s) up as per the standard... no go.

The error was in ALL the junction boxes at the desks so the only thing for it was to 'butcher' the cabling at the switch end to reverse the error. I did leave documentation for the next victim though, unlike those before me.

Don't trust the colour nor much else about cabling.

Good Luck
