After I installed system 9.2.1 I had an enormous number of disconnects. I tended to blame everything external including my ISP. However the problem was in the default modem with Sys 9.2. (Mac internal 56k). Selecting "Mac internal 56k (v.34... " instead via "Modem" in "Control panels" solved the problem entirely. I no longer worry about turning off any other gadget.
