Any ideas? Does anyone else back up this way? Is there a better way to
do it?

Hi Andrew,
If iPhoto becomes unstable or runs super slow, it may have a confused
image database. To
rebuild its database, hold down the Option and Shift keys while
launching iPhoto. If the problem still exists, try rebuilding it again
until it’s fixed.
