Thanks to those who tried to help. I solved the problem, after hours of tearing out hair!
Guess what? Where the site was hosted the "helpful" hosting company added Frontpage extension files (gobs of them) without me asking them to do so. I stripped all of these files, re-loaded my files and now all is behaving splendidly! Oh how I hate Microsoft!!
