Mac OS X comes with built-in software for many scanners (not sure about yours). If so, you can use the "Image Capture" application (in your Applications folder) to do scanning. It can also share your scanner with other Macs via your home network (if desired). I don't know if it would be better or worse for you than Epson's software, but at least it's another option and doesn't require any further downloads.
