I haven't got a 10.3.9 machine in front of me to test this evening, but in Tiger (10.4.4) with iCal 2.0.3 there is an option in the Print dialogue. Under an "Options" heading there are two tickboxes: "Mini-monhts" and "Calendar Keys". Obviously, turning off the Mini-months increases the amout of space as you suggested. Perhaps this feature was added in iCal 2.
