OS9 on G4

I have received several conflicting pieces of information  as to 
whether I can load up an early G4 (400mhz) silver tower model solely 
with OS9.

Castlereagh School needs to run OS9 for their educational software 
and would prefer not to have the OSX /classic setup.  Can I install 
OS9 as the sole operating system?
