For member's info, I had been meticulously following (or so I thought) the Take Control of Fonts in Mac OS X publication

It is an exhaustive publication and it was only after one of my documents requested Palatino that I recalled putting it in a safe place as recommended, but overlooked reloading after the removal of unwanted fonts.

All the same it was most relieving to have an external clone of the Hard Drive, as the font problem had not been diagnosed - thanks to Superdooper. A thoroughly reliable sleep promoting application designed for tinkerers like myself

Tony Palatino font attached.The corrupt Font probably caused your Desktop Icons & Finder flashing problem.
