I had a SE W550i which used to sync perfectly. then one day it just wouldn't, same error as yours. It also stopped syncing perfectly with my car (but would do so grudgingly, mostly)
I never found out why and assumed that the bluetooth was a bit buggered from being repeatedly dropped. I lost it recently and replaced with a K800 (whoo-hooo! 3.2mp camera) which is quite happy with isync.
My daughter's K700i never synced at all with her iBook (via bluetooth adapter) but does so quite easily on a Macbook.
Unfortunately I have googled for Apple articles on it without success, and as usual, you can't talk to anyone at Apple.
