I have run Disk Utility on my iMac and this was the message I received.

The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Error - The underlying task reported failure to exit.
1 HFS Volume checked. Volume needs repair."

Does this mean my Hard Disk needs to be replaced? Can a HD be "repaired"?
Or
Does it mean I should re-install the OS?

Disk Warrior says much the same. It cannot repair it.

There are no obvious symptoms of impending disaster but I have backed-up
everything.

Start up from another system ...( external firewire would be OK ) ...... and run Disk Utility
to repair the volume, and then see what you have

Lot's of times it will repair , but depending on the trouble you may need to do a reformat .

You cannot do a repair from the OSX working on the HD
