Believe me Glenn it works if you follow the instructions.
When you click on your Mac HD on your desktop to highlight it, then
in Finder > File > Get Info
In the 'Get Info' window, click the Mac HD icon that you want to
change and
then Edit > Paste and it will replace your MacHD icon to the new iMac
one you copied.
To select the icon you wish to use:
1. Click on the icon you wish to use
2. Click on Finder – Edit – Copy
To change the old icon to the new icon:
1. Click on the icon for the application you wish to change
2. Click on Finder – File – Get Info
3. In the Get Info window, click on the icon you wish to change
4. Click on Finder – Edit – Paste
