Classic Ipod & Car USB Deck

I used to be able to connect my 3rd Gen iPod to my car stereo system  
via a USB Port on the car stereo.

I've been unable to get my Classic iPod to work however.  Is this  
because the Classic iPod functions via USB 2 or some other reason?
