This can be caused by having a single licence for Office 2008 and installing the programs on more than one computer. If your computers are networked together Office will detect hat the program is installed on more than one computer and you will normally get a message similar to "Your installation is exceeds the number of installations permitted etc etc"

It does appear however that you can still run Word on the computer which the error message appeared as long as you close down the program on the other computers.

The above of course may not be the reason why you are having problems as it may be something entirely different in your case but I am mentioning it so people are aware of what can happen.
