Hi fellow mac users

Thank you for your overwhelming support to the questions I posted yesterday about accessing a copy of a Windows OS for my mac. I thought it might be helpful to offer responses via one email (as opposed to many small ones.

Hi Susan
As I tend to be spoilt in being able to buy all of my Mac stuff at one Apple outlet at any given time (ie: hardware and software) , I mistakenly thought that PC distributors operated the same way. Apparently not - not all PC hardware stores sell software for their products. I had been trying some of the more common PC hardware retailers (ie: Arrow, Computer Expo, Hewlett- Packard, Tang, a couple of others (whose names I've forgotten), and even Harvey Normans). All of these companies that I had heard of in relation to PC's. I didn't think of Officeworks (I often forget their wider range of equipment) and I'll be honest - I've never heard of Harris Technology.

I have followed your suggestion and contacted Daniel, to see what he may be able to do or suggest. Thank you.

On your follow-up email, you suggested installing Windows on a Bootcamp partition. Unfortunately I don't currently have Bootcamp, and apparently won't be able to get it until I install Leopard (which I am currently avoiding). Thanks.

Hi Kevin
If I have difficulties, I'll get back to you. Thank you.

Hi Paul
My limited knowledge of PC stores has been a big part of the problem of knowing where to go to buy PC stuff, as it's something I've never needed to do. Apple shops always have what I need computer-wise. I appreciate the information you provided on the differences between XP Home Ed. & XP Pro Ed. It was extremely helpful - I would have probably just gone with the Home Ed. because it would have seemed basic enough for what I want to use it for, however, if it is likely to cause more headaches than it's worth, I would prefer to avoid it completely.

As I'm still using Tiger (by preference) I don't have Bootcamp, and many attempts to find it for download have been impossible, as it is apparently no longer available except for being part of the Leopard OS. (I'm avoiding installing Leopard as long as possible, at least until they have ironed out as many of the continuing bugs as possible).

Thank you for your additional link about Crippleware.

Hi Greg
This may explain why a couple of the stores that I rang said that it was no longer available, hence my panic at trying to get hold of it before it becomes impossible to do so. Thanks for your info.

Hi Daniel
Thanks for your explanation of OEM - as noted in my off-list email to you, I wasn't aware of OEM but that acronym was used by a couple of stores, when explaining to me the reason why I needed to buy additional hardware. Now it makes sense. Thanks for your helpful explanation.

Hi James
After further consideration I am going to try to get a copy of Windows XP Pro (if I can get it), otherwise I will probably go with Vista. If I need to go with Vista, I will take your suggestion on board. Thank you.

Hi Adam
Thanks for opening up the discussion on software legalities. While I find a lot of the following discussions a little confusing, I'm sure that they would probably be beneficial for me to understand.

Personally, I would prefer to buy a legal copy of Windows XP Pro regardless, however if I'm unable to register it, I won't. I've been quite fortunate in terms of all of the software that I have had to date, with very little problems. (I'm not quite sure why one registers software - as I've found from personal experience, that with registered software, if something does go wrong, they always blame the hardware anyway).

Thanks to further discussion beyond this point, from Ian, Neil, Paul, Stuart and Mart. It is very interesting.

Again thanks to the support and expertise of such giving people, in sharing their knowledge and suggestions with others on this list.

Regards
Rosie
