Clyde,
With the MAc you already get a set development tool. On your HD you
should find a folder Developer where there group off application can /
are installed. Some of these are: Xcode, Interface Builder ... and if
you download the fee SDK kit for the iPhone you will also get specific
apps to build apps for the iPhone. You even get an iPhone simulator.
Cheers,
Peder

Hi,
I've been a Mac user for about 6 months now, and throughly enjoy it.
Prior to retiring, I was a analyst/programmer for 30+ years
writing in most of the traditional languages (assember, FORTRAN,
Basic, Visual Basic (early versions), COBOL, C++, and some of the
4GLs), but it was mainly text based applications. Since retiring, I
have programmed (by hand) my website using HTML, PHP and javascript
and the MYSQL data base.
I have Microsoft Visual C++ .net programs, and while I've written a
number of applications in that, they again are only text based (run
in the DOS screen), and I find the whole business of driving the
compiler etc, plus the complexity of screen handling just too much
to be bothered with.
Now that I have the iMac, I would like to develop some programs
(mainly for my own use) that have a graphical interface. These
programs would mainly manipulate midi and wave files, and hence need
to be able to work at the bit and byte level. The programs are not
doing anything particularly complex, so processing speed is not a
major consideration.
I was wondering if there is a relatively easy program to use that
is not too expensive, and that doesn't require that I fight all the
project control complexity as if I was writing a system for the
Australian Government.
An equivalent of Visual Basic would be fine, provided it could
handle:
(a) binary files (eg wave files and midi files)
(b) manipulate at bits and bytes.
(c) its not too expensive
Can anyone suggest a suitable compiler etc from their experience
that would meet my needs?
with thanks .... Clyde
