Looks like the interest has brought down the Telstra mobile website(!)

$30 per month 2 year contract: upfront cost of
- $279 for the 8GB iPhone model
- $399 for the 16GB iPhone model

$80 per month 2 year contract:
- 8GB iPhone free

$100 per month 2 year contract:
- 16GB iPhone free

All plans include free Wi-Fi access at Telstra hotspots

Considering Telstra's website still says their cheapest NextG plan is $49 per month, the $30 per month deal is impressive. However, i think I've found out how much extra they charge for data:
- $5 per month = 5MB of data!!!
- $29 per month = 80MB of data

$1 per MB excess data charges

bloomin heck, the highway robbers - that's as bad as they charged for GPRS. Here's hoping they actually update these prices for the iPhone :-(

Unfortunately it looks like Telstra NextG may be the only network in Australia supporting full 3G speeds of the iPhone outside of metro areas (as Neil mentioned), not to mention Telstra’s wider coverage and faster NextG network. damn.

CAUDIT is apparently in the process of negotiating special corporate plans with Optus (and maybe Telstra) so hopefully those of us at the various universities around Australia will be able to get iPhones on nice cheap corporate plans.
