I have to admit Ray, that I rarely have to charge my Samsung 701 from the mains because I frequently use the car charger. So perhaps if I adopted the same atitude to the iPhone it would not be a problem ?

My Belkin Tunebase FM iPod player came with an iPod Touch cradle. The iPhone 3G fits it quite nicely. Despite a warning that the device is not designed to work with the iPhone and offers to change to Aircraft Mode, it actually works fine, and charges the iPhone to boot.

The only caveat is that while using as an iPod the iPhone does produce a bit of interference. Belkin have now produced a Tunebase unit which is designed to dampen the interference, but from the reviews it's still not 100% successful.

Nevertheless, it works well enough for me to be able to listen to my podcasts, puts it in easy reach for dialing numbers (while stopped, of course! :-) ) and in easy view for use in GPS mode. A great car charger!
