The battery icon in the menu bar on my 3 month old MacBook Pro has a "X" on it when the power cord is connected and also when running on battery power only.
The "X" remains there no matter display preference I choose: icon, percentage or time. The words "No batteries available" and "Power Source: Battery" are greyed out when running on battery power only. The words "No batteries available" and "Power Source: Power Adapter" are greyed out when mains power is plugged in. Green light is on on power plug.
