iCal does not have a "whole of year" view, but you can view more than one month at a time in the "minimonth" calendar at the bottom of the left hand part of the screen. Simply drag upwards on the border above the minicalendar, and more minicalendars will appear. How many you can see will depend, of course, on the height of your display. On my 24" iMac the most I can see is six.
