Thank you for your very helpful response, Ronni.
My HD at the moment is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Will have to plan some backups very carefully before considering installing.

Hit "send" before I mentioned this:
!!! VERY IMPORTANT !!!
The computer you are going to install Snow Leopard on MUST be setup
with the GUID partitioning scheme.

there is a sort of footnote paragraph that says:
32-bit compatible.
To ensure simplicity and flexibility, Mac OS X still comes in one
version that runs both 64-bit and 32-bit applications. So you
don't need to update everything on your system just to run a
single 64-bit program. And new 64-bit applications work just fine
with your existing storage devices, PCI cards, and Snow
Leopard-compatible printers.
Does this mean that any application that currently works on 10.5.8
will continue to work on Snow Leopard?
Hi Merv,
By all accounts in the press thus far Snow Leopard will upgrade
your existing Leopard installation maintaining your settings and
quarantining any kexts (drivers) or applications that are know to
not work. It will warn you when this occurs.
Rosetta (as an optional install) is still in Snow Leopard.
I would go through all your applications and check for updates,
will save you a lot of time/hassle in the long run.
Use System Profiler to check all your Applications, it will show if
Universal, Intel, or PowerPC.
A forum list running here "Application Compatibility Thread":

Make sure that before doing the Upgrade you do a BACKUP!
A hard drive can fail at any time, but upgrading an OS puts a heavy
load on it, so if it's getting ready to fail, it is likely to
happen during an upgrade.
Not a bad article "Preparing your Mac for Snow Leopard" here:
