Hi all,
Having a bit of a kerfuffle with a Macbook G4 (tiger) which gets the grey apple but doesnt get the spinning cog. Have done the following

- pram zap
- safe mode start

no good

- start from DVD

Disc utility: Check and Repair Permissions is greyed out
Disc repair attempted, it generated an error something like "disc repair could not connect with a disc repair component so unable to repair disc" - happened several attempts.

Undeterred I started it in target disc mode and tried to repair from another laptop. Still no Permissions repair option. Got a lot further, lots of activity, but eventually "after three attempts could not repair disc"

Tried again using disc in master laptop a few times, then tried with disc in diseased laptop, this time it got far further through the repair but still bugged out after 10 minutes unable to complete.

To the point: what do people feel is a good tool for resolving what still appears to be a "soft" error on a HDD? I have never used Diskwarrior because Disk Utility has always come up with the good so far. Would prefer not to wipe and reinstall the HDD and make a child cry.

Any votes for diskwarrior?

Sorry for the length of the post. Many thanks. DD
