A couple of suggestions:

1. Locate the preferences file in ~/Library/Preferences and drag it to the 
Desktop or the Trash before installing

or

2. Drag the currently-installed Application file to the Trash and then install 
the latest version. 

If neither operation succeeds, you can simply restore the moved files to their 
original locations and continue to use the old version while you contact Tech 
Support...
