Excel won't open

Please can anyone help?

OS 10.6.2 (recently installed)
Office 2008
latest installed update Word 12.2.3
Word runs fine

I open Excel
takes a while
then i get a strange document - "Page_1-1.bmp"
and heaps of characters starting with "BMBø" then a page full of vvvvv

can't open any of my Excel docs.
Deleted com.microsoft.Excel.plist
restarted, but no change.

any suggestions appreciated please.
