When you see them little, you're still looking at the thumbnail of it, but the actual or original file (from when you double click it) isn't actually there (or not where it should be). You can try correcting it by rebuilding the iPhoto database. As you launch iPhoto hold down the Command and Option(Alt) keys. You will then be presented with a window asking you to rebuild the Database.
