When is the last time you checked on the health of the external drive? The
first and easiest way is to run Disk Utility (Applications/Utilities) and make
sure that the external drive shows up, then click the "Repair Disk" button.
This will detect and fix any problems. If this doesn't work, you may have to
invest in a more specialist application such as Data Rescue. I used this
successfully last week to restore a Time Machine disc which was refusing to
mount at all, and which Disk Utility was unable to repair.
