I've been wondering about something just like this. Been considering getting the cheapest iPod Touch as a home remote.
My "entertainment unit" is a little different: A written-off Macbook Pro which had it's screen broken. I removed the screen, losing WiFi :-( , connected an S-Video adapter and connected that to a cheap but largish CRT TV. I call it the Laptopless. Mostly using Plex which is very nice.
