This is not a trivial matter, and generally requires the user to get his/her 
fingers a little dirty with with some UNIX code. The degree of difficulty also 
depends on the version of Mac OS X you are running. It's MUCH easier in Snow 
Leopard and Lion than in in previous versions, but it still has to be tackled 
with care and a little reading before you start. 

Typing "change short user name os x" into Google revealed many answers. I 
include two of them, one a do-it-yourself solution, and the other a utility you 
can download to help.
