Hi Callum

Other options to try.
ImageCapture (in Applications folder). Open up, and when plugged in, it 
hopefully may show all the photos not the device. Then give you options to 
select all and import into Picture folder. (or someone else). Then import into 
iPhoto.
PhoneView. (Good for other things too) - <http://www.ecamm.com/mac/phoneview/> 
Not free though. Gives you access to the device, and photos are listed. So may 
be able to import from there as well.

Just a couple of things I thought of as well….
(Sorry might be missing some of your info, as sidetracked on another issue plus 
two other jobs at the same time,…lol).
