Hi Merv,

Not really an answer to your question as I've never tried it ;o)

However:
My only experience of "Just Answer" has been when it comes up in the google
results when I'm troubleshooting some technical issue - I've never felt the
need to cough up to see what an unidentified "expert" might say when there
is usually more than enough informed free discussion in various forums. I
must admit I would never have thought about it for queries outside the
computer/IT fields.

I am, however, a subscriber to various rootsweb mailing lists and have been
VERY impressed with how helpful they are to anyone posting a query. Although
the rootsweb mailing lists seem to be part of the larger ancestry.com
set-up, you do not have to be a paying ancestry.com subscriber to use the
lists (I'm not).

You have to decide which lists you think you want to use as there are
thousands of them - eg check out the England mailing lists here:
<http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/ENG/>

Some thoughts include:
€ you are more likely to get good relevant help if you make your enquiry
more specific and include the relevant info that you already have
€ keep your query relevant to the list - don't try and research Cornish
miners via the Yorkshire list ;o)
€ you can always sign up for a few lists that cover your research area and
just "lurk" for a while prior to posting
€ or just browse the archives to get an idea - eg
<http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/index/LANCSGEN/>
€ or even try a search with an ancestor's name eg
<http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/search?path=LANCSGEN>
 - you MIGHT just get lucky ;o)

HTH

Cheers

Neil
