Hi Severin, I don't have any first hand advice, but performance would be drastically reduced if the specifications aren't met... It possibly would not even install, or if it did I think it would not work.
Even the 32-bit version of X-Plane uses around 3.5 GB Memory. "The memory limits on a 32-bit application actually limit the amount of virtual memory provided, and X-Plane sometimes uses more virtual memory than physical memory. So X-Plane may crash when it runs out of virtual memory, even if less than 3 GB of physical memory is being used." The 64-bit version uses 16GB memory and often much more. As you have not given the specifications of your grandson's Mac it is hard to really comment on performance.
