Hi WAMUG members,

I have been Beta Testing Yosemite (installed on a bootable external drive) for
some time. I haven't as yet installed Yosemite on my work machine.

The first thing I noticed was the Yosemite system font is changed.
Mail, Messages, and Safari are significantly different and worth spending some
time with.

You’ll also want to try out the massively overhauled Spotlight, which now
appears in the middle of your screen and includes built-in Web searches, maps,
and more.
Press Command-Spacebar and try it out. And click the Notification Center icon
on the right side of your menu bar to see the new Today view and widgets.

Apple's made a lot of design tweaks for OS X Yosemite — one of the biggest is
the system font, which is changed for the first time since OS X was released.
Yosemite changes the font from Lucida Grande to the Helvetica Neue family,
which lends to the thin and clean design style that Apple's been favouring
lately. It is pretty much everywhere across the OS, from the menu bar to app
windows.

Helvetica Neue also debuted as the iPhone and iPad's system font in iOS 7 last
year.
With Apple placing a big focus on consistency between platforms today, it makes
plenty of sense to see it cross over to the desktop. Perhaps more importantly
though, Apple's touting the change as a boon for legibility. It says that the
new font looks great on high-definition displays — and with Retina screens
making their way from iOS devices to the Mac, Apple needs a font that looks its
best even on close examination.

The changes take a bit of getting used to. I did not like the look of Yosemite
when I first started testing it, but the more I used it, the more I came to
like a lot of the changes.
But as I mentioned above, I have not installed it on my work MacBook Pro yet, I
might install it on my MacBook Air first.
Then when all the Applications I use regularly are completely upgraded for
Yosemite I will probable upgrade my MBP to Yosemite.

Cheers,
Ronni
