Just to share my experience, I consistently now do my iOS updates over the air
direct to the device in a wireless environment. This has been 100% reliable for
me for many years now. I have consistently found for others in my house and
friends that using iTunes to download the update and then update the connected
iOS device is always slower than OTA, but always reliable.

No apparent downside for me, always do a backup to iTunes prior to updates as
well.

Regards

Pete
